Saturday, April 15, the success of the 4-H Alberta Communications program was exemplified by 28 senior-aged 4-H Members who gathered in Sherwood Park, Alberta to compete for the top place at the 4-H Alberta Communication Competition.
4-H Members in Alberta build communication skills through a 4-H Member requirement that involves preparing a speech or presentation. 4-H Members qualify for the 4-H Alberta Communications Competition by progressing through competition at the club, district, and regional levels to compete.
Each of the seven 4-H regions was represented by two members that competed in presentations or the public speaking competition.
The Presentation competition began the day with fourteen members presenting an 8-10 minute presentation about a topic that they researched and prepared. After each presentation, the judge had an opportunity to ask the presenter one question about their topic.

Wyatt L. – North 40-Mile 4-H Club
3rd – Jane S. – Irvine 4-H Beef Club
In the afternoon fourteen speakers delivered a 4-6 minute speech. At the club, district, and regional level members deliver their own speeches to qualify for the provincial competition. Those who qualify for the provincial level are provided a topic 10 days prior to the competition. The competitor must write and prepare a speech within that time period. The topic this year was “4-H Canada’s Leadership Development Pillars.”
The prepared speeches alternated with impromptus that were 2-3 minutes in length. During impromptu, members were presented with three different topics, from which they could craft their impromptu speech.
The first place winner will have a chance to participate in the Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture Competition in Toronto in the fall of 2023 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

Congratulations to all 4-H Members who presented their presentations and speeches in a professional and polished manner. All Members should be very proud of their achievements and development of communication skills.
Thank you to all the volunteer judges and committee volunteers that spent the day with the 4-H youth. We would also like Altalink for their long-time support of the communication events at club, district, regional and provincial levels.
