Introducing Project in a Weekend: A Unique Opportunity for 4-H Senior Members

Complete Your Project and Record Book in One Weekend and Focus on Other Club Requirements

Are you a Senior 4-H member looking for a time-efficient way to complete your project for the 2023-24 club year? Look no further! We are thrilled to introduce “Project in a Weekend,” a fantastic opportunity for members like you to complete your project and record book in just one weekend. This innovative approach allows you to focus on fulfilling other club requirements while also exploring new project interests.

Project in a Weekend Guidelines:
  • Open to Senior 4-H members only
  • Participants must plan to enroll in the 2023-24 4-H club year
  • Full weekend attendance is required (12-15 hours of project time)
  • A project record book insert must be completed during the weekend

Upon completion of the weekend, participants will receive a certificate to present to their club leader, confirming the completion of their project. With your project and record book out of the way, you can concentrate on meeting the other requirements necessary to be a member in good standing.

Project in a Weekend Details:

Crafts – Watercolours

Make your own professional quality, non-toxic, and vibrant watercolour paints that are free of toxic preservatives, additives, heavy metals, and petroleum-based pigments found in traditional paint. Explore the fundamentals of colour theory. Learn and practice the basic principles of watercolour painting. The final project will be for the members to create their own masterpiece on a canvas. No experience is needed.

Photograph – Telling Your Story with Nature Photography

The goal for each 4-H member is to walk away from the 4-H conference learning how to capture a story of Nature with a Photography Camera of their choice. Point and Shoot, DSLR or iPhone or Android Laptop, that has an editing program, and a place to store their images.

In this photography project the members will learn how to use these concepts to tell their own story for the 4-H Project:
    1. Learning, Storytelling with Photography
    2. Composition and Critiquing
    3. Lighting concepts in photographing Nature outdoors
    4. Learning their basic and advanced settings in their camera.
    5. Basic Editing – Microsoft 10
    6. Sharing their Photography Story, as a Project to others.

This will be a fun-filled weekend.

Science & Technology- Rockets & Engineering 
Build a Bottle Rocket, Test Fly Rockets, Modify and Improve your Rocket.
    1. Build Rocket Base and Attach Fins
    2. Build and Attach Nose Cones
    3. Build Parachutes
    4. Attach Parachutes to Nose Cones
    5. Decorate Rockets
    6. Test Fly Rockets
Extend the Bottle Rocket add Electronics to record its flight data.  Compete to see whose rocket travels the farthest from its launch site.
    1.  Review Rocket Flight and Potential Data to Collect
    2. Build Electronics and Test
    3. Install Electronics
    4. Test Fly Rockets
    5.  Compete for Highest Flight
Engineering Day

Building on the shorter programs, continue building more complex robots.  Compete in more complex challenges with your robots to see who can solve the challenge the fastest.

Raspberry Pi and Arduino Projects

Build simple robotics with each platform, explore the differences with each one.  Included a crash course in Python programming and Arduino IDE programming.

Compete to see who can complete simple challenges with the designs.

Outdoor Skills
Come spend the weekend with us as we disconnect from the outside world and connect with the wilderness! The goal for the weekend is to give participants the skills to be able to plan, pack and execute an overnight trip in the wilderness. We will be learning survival and outdoor skills, animal safety and learning about central Alberta topography and weather. This course we will covering  the following:
    1. How to pack, and the 10 essentials
    2. Shelter building and knots
    3. Fire building,
    4. Outdoor Cooking
    5. Working together as a team and sharing their experiences

Friday evening and Saturday during the day will be spent learning and mastering skills so participants can camp under the stars Saturday Night in a shelter built by their teammates and themselves. This will be sure to be a fun, hands-on experience! No outdoor experience is required, just a wondrous sense of adventure.

Provincial Event Registration Policies

Payment of Program/Event Fees

  • 4-H Alberta requires that complete registrations are processed through the online registration system, by the registration deadline, and payment in full has been received, prior to acceptance.
  • 4-H Alberta is responsible for setting fees for all 4-H Alberta programs/events. Each program/event has its own fee.
    • All requests for late registration (after the Regular Registration Deadline) will be accepted at the sole discretion of the program lead
    • GST is included in all 4-H program registration fees.
  • 4-H Alberta reserves the right to:
    • Cancel programs due to insufficient registrations or circumstances out of our control;
    • Reallocate applicants to other similar programs based on applicants choice;
    • Refund the entire registration fee if a suitable alternate program is unavailable.

Insufficient Program/Event Payment

  • Registration is not considered complete until full payment is received.
  • Any cheque returned by the bank  must be reissued and processed prior to the program/event start date. Failure to do so will cancel the delegate’s program registration.
  • 4-H Alberta staff will contact the individual requesting full payment in a timely manner following the bank notification.

Program/Event Registration Cancellation

  • A percentage of the registration fee will be retained on all cancellations to help recover costs and administration process:
    • $0-$50 = no fee
    • $51 or more = 30%
    • Contact programs@4hab.com if you are unable to attend due to extenuating circumstances. Physician notes will be requested when applicable.
  • Cancellations received less than 14 days before the program start date will forfeit the entire registration fee unless a delegate replacement is available or extenuating circumstances are at play.

The 4-H Alberta Program/Event Registration Fee Procedure is subject to change at the discretion of the Program Lead.
