Registration Cost: $120 (financial assistance up to $60 may be available)

Who Can Attend: Youth ages 9 (born 2015)-15 year olds, open to current members and people new to 4-H. Please note – you may only register for one intro club per 4-H year (Sept. 2024-August 2025).

BONUS: All Intro-Club members will receive an invitation to join us for several other FREE bonus field trips and learning days. Details will be available prior to the first intro club.

 

What is Intro Club:Learn to Do By Doingwith hands-on activities as you explore an exciting variety of 4-H projects! This STEAM-focused club combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, featuring engaging projects like Food Science, Hydroponics, Pottery, Rocket Building, Global Farming, and more. Each session sparks creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking while helping you develop new skills in a fun and interactive environment.

In just six weeks, you will experience a range of projects and will learn how to run a business meeting, improve your communication & record-keeping skills and make new friends along the way! Through unique projects and activities, you will develop important skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication, all in a supportive and nurturing environment.

This will be a STEAM 4-H Club specifically designed for youth ages 9–15. The club will run for six weeks on Wednesday evenings from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Canyon Meadows Community Association (848 Cantabrian Dr SW, Calgary, AB). It’s the perfect opportunity for busy families to discover what 4-H is all about while giving their children the chance to explore, learn, and make new friends in a fun and engaging environment.

There are only 15 spots available so please register as soon as possible to ensure your child(ren) has a spot. The cost to register is $120 and funding of up to $60 may be available (email introclubs@4hab.com for info). Registration includes all programming, special guest instructors, workshop supplies, snacks each week and a 4-H bag.

Parent Involvement: Being part of 4-H means that your family will have opportunities to play, work and learn together. In this short six-week intro club, although not mandatory, we encourage parents/caregivers to choose one date that they could attend and support the club. Families will also be invited to attend the last hour of the final date for an achievement celebration.

STEAM 4-H WORKSHOP OUTLINE*:

March 19th – From Farm to Table: Food Science Fun Discover the fascinating science behind the food we eat in this hands-on workshop! Dive into food chemistry and sustainability with engaging experiments like testing the strength of eggs by walking on them. With fun activities to inspire curiosity and creativity, this workshop offers a unique way to explore how everyday ingredients and science come together.

March 26th – Grow Your Own Greens: Hydroponics Workshop
Dive into the world of hydroponics and explore how plants can grow without soil! This hands-on workshop introduces the basics of sustainable farming and innovative growing techniques. Whether you’re building a simple system or discovering how hydroponics supports cleaner and faster plant growth, this session is perfect for curious minds eager to learn about the future of agriculture.

April 2nd – From Clay to Creation: A Pottery Wheel Experience Dive into the exciting world of pottery with our Workshop, brought to you by Clay for Kids. Everyone loves the thrill of working on the pottery wheel! Create your very own bowl on the Clay for Kids pottery wheel, all under the expert guidance and supervision of our friendly instructor. Let your creativity flow and make something amazing!

April 9th – MIM Reach for the Moon Get in touch with your inner aerospace engineer as we explore the relationship between chemistry, physics, and space flight! We start with a discussion surrounding the chemistry of combustion and the forces required for lift off, then launch off on our own rocket building mission. Using the classic gas-producing reaction of baking soda and vinegar we will then test and launch our rockets into the sky!

April 16th – Journey 2050: Be a Global Farmer! Get ready to take on the challenge of running farms around the world! From Kenya to India to Canada, you’ll face real-life farming problems like managing water, boosting soil health, and navigating markets. Can you make your farm thrive while keeping the planet healthy? Step up and find out in this exciting adventure!

This is not a traditional 4-H club. Current members with a diary will get one point for attending the duration of an Intro Club as either completing a project or attending a Provincial event.

April 23rd – Buzzing with Knowledge: A Bee Workshop  Learn all about bees and products from the hive from a Master Beekeeper! This multimedia presentation will include lots of time for photos and questions, including a close-up look at a bumblebee nest, a wasp nest, honeycomb and more. 

April 30th – From Wheat to Pizza: Sourdough Workshop Fun Grind some wheat and get ready for a fun cooking experience! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore food security while mastering the art of making a sourdough starter, which you’ll then use to whip up a delicious sourdough crust pizza.

May 14th – Celebrate with Chocolate: A Tasting Adventure Gather your friends and family for a fun chocolate-tasting party, where you can savour and evaluate different chocolates while reflecting on our shared experiences, and playing some entertaining games to celebrate our six weeks.

Provincial Event Registration Policies

Payment of Program/Event Fees

  • 4-H Alberta requires that complete registrations are processed through the online registration system, by the registration deadline, and payment in full has been received, prior to acceptance.
  • 4-H Alberta is responsible for setting fees for all 4-H Alberta programs/events. Each program/event has its own fee.
    • All requests for late registration (after the Regular Registration Deadline) will be accepted at the sole discretion of the program lead
    • GST is included in all 4-H program registration fees.
  • 4-H Alberta reserves the right to:
    • Cancel programs due to insufficient registrations or circumstances out of our control;
    • Reallocate applicants to other similar programs based on applicants choice;
    • Refund the entire registration fee if a suitable alternate program is unavailable.

Insufficient Program/Event Payment

  • Registration is not considered complete until full payment is received.
  • Any cheque returned by the bank  must be reissued and processed prior to the program/event start date. Failure to do so will cancel the delegate’s program registration.
  • 4-H Alberta staff will contact the individual requesting full payment in a timely manner following the bank notification.

Program/Event Registration Cancellation

  • A percentage of the registration fee will be retained on all cancellations to help recover costs and administration process:
    • $0-$50 = no fee
    • $51 or more = 30%
    • Contact programs@4hab.com if you are unable to attend due to extenuating circumstances. Physician notes will be requested when applicable.
  • Cancellations received less than 14 days before the program start date will forfeit the entire registration fee unless a delegate replacement is available or extenuating circumstances are at play.

The 4-H Alberta Program/Event Registration Fee Procedure is subject to change at the discretion of the Program Lead.
